On the Web: Obscure Street Photographer Vivian Maier

If you have any interest in street photography, you must check out this blog site. John Maloof bought deceased street photographer Vivian Maier’s negatives and prints at an auction, and discovered a goldmine of street images from Chicago in th 1950s and 60s. It’s really good stuff. And what’s more, it mostly appears to have been done on a twin-lens reflex camera, rather than the stereotypical rangefinder. Makes me feel like I might be on to something, as I’ve been experimenting with street photography using a my Yashica-mat.

See the blog here.

Right after this story broke last fall I dusted off my Yashica mat and did some street shooting with it. It wasn’t long after that when I made a bulk film purchase for 2400 more exposures with it (photo of it all is here). :D

But yeah. Twin Lens is awesome for street photography, I’ve been really enjoying using mine this year.

That’s a lot of film to go through! Color too…more expense (I read your post). I wish my Yashica TLR could handle 220 film so I could shoot more without changing rolls. I might be less ‘precious’ with each shot that way! But it’s still early days yet with my TLR-based street photography. I have a new (to me) Bessa-R that needs a workout as well. Thanks for your reply!

A fantastic find! I wish I had known about her when I made my post about street photography. Perhaps I’ll have to take the TLR out for a spin soon.

At any rate, this is an outstanding human interest story. I’m glad these photos are being made available on the web and not being sold or put in some clandestine gallery.

I didn’t knew that there was a street photography. I only knew it after I’ve read the captions of the picture. Really interesting. I need to brush up my self with photography. I’m so left behind. Nice one, very informative. Gonna research about this one. Nice pics. =)
