On the Web: Film-Only Wedding Photographer Jonathan Canlas

I stumbled across Jonathan Canlas work recently. He’s a wedding photographer out of Utah, and he shoots exclusively on film! Brave soul in this day and age, although I wonder if clients even stop to wonder about this anymore. Digital was cool until it became the default, now…film, what’s that? Well if you’re reading my blog, you know what’s what.

Jonathan’s  blog, which contains weddings and personal work, is here (link). And his official site is here (link). Check it out!

I assume typical people shopping for wedding photographers just assume it is all digital and don’t care. There are a few hearty clients out there yet who do dislike the current trends in wedding photos. I’ve been hired a few times in the past two years by people who only wanted me because I still do shoot film and wanted something outside of the aesthetics of contemporary wedding photography.

I did my first only-film wedding last summer with the Bronica ETRSi, N80, and a Holga. Used a bunch of Acros and Portra 160NC (bright, midday outdoor), and only natural light! Turned out pretty well, too! I’d definitely do it again, but it really takes the right couple to embrace my vision…

Both looks beautiful. I heard a lot about Jonathan. He is a very good photographer.

The resolution at which you shoot your digital image is the final one. You simply cannot increase the resolution. Images shot with film are actually at a far higher resolution to start with and, by scanning the film using a high quality scanner, one can actually improve the image quality.
